RE: It's offical, Spring is here in Anchorage!

We were in the Itasca Suncruiser Class A with a platform on the back wrapped in a blue tarp and we were in the hookups on the bike path. Spot R84 to be exact. Seward was busy this weekend. Don't think there will much chance of getting hookups along the water soon, at least not if it is on a Friday :(

RE: It's offical, Spring is here in Anchorage!

We are going to Seward also this weekend. Look for us in a Big Horn 5th Wheel and a big silver Dodge Megacab. Stop by and say hello. I think I saw you as you were just setting up...were you on the back side on the end of the hookups...Resurrection campground? I did want to stop by, but we ended up losing track of time. Hope you had fun!

Well, right now it is sunny and 58 degrees. I know that sounds cold, but it really does feel warm.

RE: It's offical, Spring is here in Anchorage!

So, did anyone else go out last weekend or going this upcoming? We are hitting Seward again. Sealife Center is free on the 10th of every month for Alaskan residents.

RE: It's offical, Spring is here in Anchorage!

Well, we are parked on the waterfront in Seward right now watching a harbor seal and an otter just 50 feet in front frolicking in the water...no wind and the sun came out in nice spurts. Glad to start off the season!

RE: Alaskans-sound off

So, has anyone gone south yet? We are planning on going to Seward next weekend (would have gone sooner if this darn white stuff hadn't shown it's presence again :() and I am curious as to how the frost heaves are. Last year when we had gone at the end of April, they were horrible and unmarked.

RE: Alaskans-sound off

I look forward to hearing how the beach is looking in Homer...changes so much year to year. We go to Homer over the 4th of July and dry camp across from the lagoon. That is definitely a week I look forward to every year :)

RE: Alaskans-sound off

Well, we brought ours home yesterday to start the spring cleaning. Didn't realize how much I missed it until getting in there again :) Washed all the bedding and we are wiping it down today. Now...the hard part is reorganizing. We got our Class A a month into the season last year, so this will be our first full season. From experience of our last one, it usually takes me a good couple years before I know where I want everything LOL! Off to Seward in a few short weeks to watch the gray whales (hopefully).

RE: Alaskans-sound off

I seem to recall that it was about 3% of final sale. When we did it, they don't charge anything for the first 60 days on the lot, but we had to have Karen's RV inspect it first and that was about $350. We had tried putting it up ourselves at the end of the season the year before and when it didn't sell, we didn't want to hassle with at the start of the next season.

RE: Alaskans-sound off

Hey JC - how long have you had your toy hauler up for sale? We had a hard time selling our Class C last year so put it up at RV Exchange and it sold within a couple weeks. Just a thought for you.

RE: Alaskans-sound off

We have a class A and DH wants to bring it home this Thursday so we can start our "Spring Cleaning" of it. We need to wash all the linens and air it out. I really want to shampoo the carpet before starting the season. We have already started buying to stock it for the summer. Our first trip will be around the same time as JCGibson's. We start off the season in Seward since no other places are really open until Memorial Day...little chilly there, but all the more reason to enjoy the campfire. Our times are spent mostly chasing the fish around on the Kenai and weekends where the fishing is slow we love to relax at Quartz Creek or Willow...Have never been to Eklutna Lake but would love to go, as well as Hidden Lake. I hear though that if you want to get a spot, you need to head out on a Thursday. That's tough to do since we are working. :( I really wish that Girdwood had an RV park.

RE: How often do you do it?

From May 1st, as soon as we are able to get the RV out (due to snow) until the end of September, we go EVERY weekend. Literally.

RE: Talkeenta Alaska

We were at the Moose Drop Festival this weekend also. Talkeetna is a great place to visit...although my first negative experience there was a the specialty chocolate store on the end. They evidently don't like children much at all and she spoke quite harshly to my son twice. He had a jawbreaker in his mouth and she told him he had to leave and he couldn't touch anything. He left and came back without the jawbreaker and wanted to buy an item there and she saw him touch it and scolded him. I should mention my son is ten and has manners in a store. I should have known from the sign they had up saying, "Pets welcome, Children need to be on a leash". I was offended at her attitude toward my son and will not be going back to that particular store again.

RE: Homer RV Parks?

And actually to be even more specific, it is was renamed the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon last year, although it will probably always be known as the "Fishing Hole" by the local folk (at least me :)) It is only open to snagging at certain times, which can be found on the State of Alaska Department of Fish and Game website. The most recent opening to snagging was July 5th. (We missed it by two days) It can get pretty crazy there. When it is the silver run, you can see the bubbling of the fish in the hole. Even without snagging, fishing can be pretty good. Typically you will see bobbers being used...if you do, see if you can get one of the locals there to show you the "Russia Method". I believe snagging is open at all times but only when it is 300 yards from the entrance to the lagoon, which basically makes it impossible to snag. There are paved spaces by the Hole where there is the fish cleaning station, and a dump and fill station. Or you can boondock across the road from the Lagoon on the City of Homer Campground which is a sandy/rocky beach area. That is $15.00 a night and you need to be careful of the soft sand. It wasn't bad this year, we were able to get our 35 ft. Itasca Suncruiser in with no problem.

RE: Homer RV Parks?

We ate at Captain Patties a couple nights ago. We are staying on the beach across from the Fishing Hole. Heritage is by no means full, but from what we tallied, they are probably making and easy $5000 a night. I won't be contributing to them, but many do. Personally though, nothing beats looking out at the ocean and beachcombing when the tide is out.

RE: Be careful out there...

From what the paper said today, www.adn.com, the driver was trying to make room for a vehicle heading southbound and his rear tires got in some soft sand which pulled him into the ditch. The couple that died were sitting on the couch and when the rv hit the trees, it basically ripped open the right side and the couple were ejected and died. They had two children that were staying at a campground with friends while the parents/group went fishing in Seward. Family members are on their way to pick up the children. Very sad.

RE: Homer RV Parks?

We boondock on the beach across from the lagoon. Obviously no hooks ups, but it is nice being by the water and you can't beat the view. Of course, it the stability of the sand is different from year to year and last year we were nervous about getting stuck...hopefully this year it is a tad more firm.

RE: Dry Camping & ATVing Memorial Weekend

I did happen to ask the difference between the ban and the suspension, and they said if there is a ban, NOTHING is allowed. :( I really hope that is not the case over the weekend.

RE: Dry Camping & ATVing Memorial Weekend

I called the Mat-Su Forestry and they stated that it is not a ban at this time, only a suspension and that campfires are fine in a fire ring/fire pit but that "you better be roasting marshmallows or hotdogs". So, as long as you use caution, a campfire is okay, not necessarily encouraged.
